Are you a Christian or just a churchgoer? Speeches about the authentic living of the faith
In this book, Metropolitan Anthony speaks of "the difference between the man who goes to church, loves the church, serves the church, preaches the gospel, and the man who is truly Christian." In the first situation it is the Christian who goes formally to church, the one who is a Christian because he was born that way, because he was told so, who keeps the commandments of the Church because "it is good", sometimes even out of superstition. Metropolitan Anthony shows that there is a great contradiction between this attitude, which, unfortunately, characterizes many Orthodox Christians, and the ideal that God calls us to reach. To be a Christian means not only to believe in Christ and to formally obey certain commandments, but it really means the total and radical change of life, following the example set by Christ, in order to reach full union with Him. And this can only be achieved through an authentic experience of faith.
