Indeed, extreme materialism, which regards death as the end point of life, is opposed to the Christian faith and its expression or experience in the Orthodox Church, through a scriptural, liturgical, ascetic, and spiritual tradition, adding as a wind that brings hope.

Through a very clear exercise, Father Theodore Papanicolaou proposes a very current reflection on the status of death in our contemporary societies. Indeed, at a time when the image becomes the medium of communication par excellence, the sight of death is most often linked to an artistic representation, an expression of the violence of a world without landmarks. However, in the death of Christ, death shapes a face, of the Risen One, which makes his approach more bearable. It is the image of a new beginning. Of course, the pain and suffering of death is real. The lack of those close to us causes a sadness that is good to recognize and respect.

Metropolitan Emanuel of France
