Church Fathers about war and military service
"The Christian's participation in any kind of war is in clear opposition to his faith. But the tolerance of the injustice done to the innocent is also to blame. " This aphoristic conclusion of Georgios Mantzaridis best expresses the attitude of the Orthodox Church towards war and military service. The church opposes the participation of Christians in wars of conquest but approves the satisfaction of military service and participation in the war for the defense of the homeland. Because the subject of this volume is the opinion of the Church Fathers of all ages on the issue of war, in particular, and military service in general, we have chosen to include in our file also recently canonized Fathers.
