The Virgin Mary in the apocryphal writings. A study about the Mother of God in ancient Christianity
The New Testament is discreet about the Virgin Mary. In contrast, early Christian literature on the Mother of God is very rich. Starting with the statement of the Nativity of a Virgin, the early Christian communities produced an impressive amount of accounts that sought to answer questions about the uniqueness of motherhood and the death of the Mother of God. At a time when Christianity had to face criticism, the person of the Virgin Mary is inscribed in narrative constructions of which the Gospels of Matthew and Luke are just expressions among others, developed in the so-called apocryphal texts.
