This volume of documents brings to the attention of the university academic environment, but also of the general public, a corpus of original documents regarding the activity of the Metropolitan Church of Moldova and Suceava, as part of the Romanian Orthodox Church, during the First World War. The texts of the reports are rendered very close to their original form, so that we did not intervene on the archaic aspect of some words, but we intervened only at the grammatical level, where it was absolutely necessary. The main body of the volume consists of a set of reports of Moldovan archdioceses and monasteries, in which archpriests, abbots and abbesses informed the Metropolitan of Moldova how parishes and monasteries were involved in accommodating army regiments, in organizing field hospitals, helping war orphans, sheltering refugees, providing food, clothing, hay for animals, etc.

The involvement of the military clergy, the confessional priests, the priests who remained in the parishes with their parishioners, the monks and nuns who served as nurses at the front, the monasteries that housed hospitals, war orphans, army regiments and refugees is a reality that was less known to this day. Therefore, this volume aims to bring to light these facts, which clearly show the role that the clergy played at that time of hard trials for the country and the nation. The clergy were with the army and the people not only through the religious services, so necessary for the spiritual life, but also through all the material means at their disposal. They often served at the cost of their lives, falling among shells on the front, or being reaped by contagious diseases.
