"Let no one reproach me if I stop talking about them, because, as you all realize, our suffering has increased: everywhere we are surrounded by swords, everywhere we fear the danger of imminent death. Some return to us with their hands cut off, others are heard to have been taken prisoner, and others are said to have been killed. I am forced to be silent, "for my soul is disgusted with my life" (Job 10: 1). Let no one seek the deepening of the Holy Scriptures from me, "for my harp has become an instrument of lamentation, and my flute the voice of mourners" (Job 30:31). The eye of the heart no longer watches over the search for mysteries, because "my soul is weary of wrath" (Ps. 118, 28). The reading of the text is already less pleasing to my soul, "for I forgot to eat my bread with the voice of my sigh" (Ps. 101: 5-6). Who doesn't like to live anymore, how can they like to talk about the mysterious meanings of the Holy Scriptures? And I, who am forced to drink bitterness every day, when I could drink a sweet wine? What is left but to give thanks with tears in the midst of the trials we endure because of our iniquities? For the One who created us, became the Father for us through the spirit of adoption that he has given us. And sometimes he feeds his sons with bread, other times he corrects them with the whip of trials, because, through pain, wounds and rewards, He teaches them to receive the eternal inheritance ”.
