The most important religious figure in the history of the Russian Church of the nineteenth century remains the great Metropolitan of Moscow, St. Filaret (Drozdov). He has gone down in history as a great hierarch and statesman, a true and unsurpassed theologian (he became the first doctor of theology in Russia), a zealous pastor and needy. In addressing the problems, he proposed solutions that were so thorough that it was virtually impossible to ignore them. The importance of Metropolitan Filaret for the Russian Orthodox Church can hardly be assessed at its fair value.

A talented preacher and teacher, a model leader and a personality through whom the Synodal translation of the Bible into Russian saw the light of day, the author of the text of the Decree on the Liberation of Peasants from Russia - here are the associations that appear on hearing his name, but these they are far from all the achievements of this pillar of the Russian Orthodox Church. The prayer life of the great hierarch was not as obvious as his activity, but its fruits, despite his discretion, could not be hidden from the eyes of his contemporaries, his many charisms being often noticed.

This volume contains a series of chosen epistles of Saint Filaret, Metropolitan of Moscow, translated for the first time into Romanian. By the same author, Doxologia Publishing House has published a volume of sermons and speeches and is preparing the publication of the second. We would also like to thank the Publishing House of the "Saint Tikhon" University of Moscow for granting the right to translation and publication.
