"Avva, tell me a word!" The dynamics of spiritual guidance in the Desert Fathers
Reading the books about God's saints does not make us holy, but reading them can "dislodge" us from the comfort and routine of our lives, can give us an impetus to embark on the path to holiness. This feeling can be felt whenever we go through the Patericul, a collection of apophtegms of those remarkable Egyptian ascetics of the fourth century. By their solitary retreat into the wilderness, these holy men, whom Orthodox spirituality knows as the Fathers of the Wilderness, chose to leave a world marked by pride, wealth, and thirst for power to enter another world in which humility, simplicity and obedience are its fundamental values.
