About the state of souls after death
The treatise On the state of souls after death written by the priest Eustratios of Constantinople (sixth century), contained between the pages of this volume and published for the first time in a modern translation, is the first apology for the worship of the saints we know. Eustratios managed to express in a well-structured text, based on the Holy Scriptures and the patristic and hagiographic writings, which he proved to know in depth, all the teaching of the Church about the work of human souls after death and, starting from this faith, he amply emphasized the need to honor the saints and to remember those who had fallen asleep. More than a simple florilegium, we have before us a dogmatic work, based on the Christology and Anthropology of the Fifth Ecumenical Council (553), springing from an obvious practical necessity of the Church.
