The life of St. Basil the New is of special importance for Byzantine studies and the history of Christian theology and spirituality. As a hagiographic text, it illustrates the form of spirituality called "the madness of Christ," an asceticism that proposes the renunciation of honorability, with advanced spirituality showing only a select few disciples. In Byzantine spirituality, Life contains the most detailed description of the particular judgment in the form of the demonic toll-houses in the air , but also of the Last Judgment . this world, Lifeintroduces the theme of the visibility of the world beyond our world, in response to the reproach of the rich merciless of hell to the patriarch Abraham: "No, father Abraham, but if any of the dead go to them, they will repent" (Luke 16:30 ).
