The name is a quintessence of the person, and the person, with all its peculiarities and energy, is present in the name. In the Old Testament tradition, as in ancient pagan cultures, there was a close connection between one's soul and one's name. In ancient societies, the magical value attributed to the word appears as a particular offering in the name that designates the person.

For primitive man, the name is inseparably attached to the designated being, to such an extent that he hides his true name from strangers to avoid spells. The name itself was invested with special powers; it was believed that the name could exert a shaping influence on the character and destiny of the child.

In Christianity the name is freed from the magical and superstitious pagan connotations. The name itself no longer exerts fatal determinism on human destiny. The name of a saint or a name that invokes God has no meaning or power without a conscious participation in the evoked reality. To call on the name of God presupposes openness to His love, to offer yourself as a living sacrifice in His hands. Without this participation and awareness, the name remains a simple label with an identifying role.
