This book aims to help readers delve deeper into the spiritual essence of the Byzantine sacred art tradition. Byzantine art cannot be condemned for not being natural, realistic, or for not faithfully reproducing the outside world. Its purpose is very different. It has a religious function. It seeks to express spiritual things in order to help man to penetrate the mysteries of the Christian religion, to rise to a higher level of being. The Byzantine period is a historical period and a place where people lived with an aspiration to the supernatural, to eternity. The Byzantines believed in the mysteries and truth revealed by Christ, in other words, in the wonderful world that exists beyond that perceived by our senses and reason, as the ancients stopped at that point.
